Spring growth for Kudos: more publishers and researchers, final call for institutional pilot partners

March 17 2015 / By Charlie Rapple

March 17th, 2015 – Kudos, which helps researchers maximize the impact and visibility of their publications, has announced the latest publishers and institutions to sign up for its services. The Kudos publisher and institutional programs help optimize communications and marketing resource by providing insight into how and where researchers are talking about their work, and to what effect, in terms of which research is attracting attention, in which channels. Those joining recently include:

  • Equinox Publishing
  • European Respiratory Society
  • Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
  • John Benjamins Publishing Company
  • QScience
  • The University of Huddersfield

Kudos has issued a “final call” for institutions interested in participating in its free pilot, which enables staff working in areas such as research impact, support, policy, development and planning to access reports on the usage of Kudos by researchers within their institution. Megan Beech, Marketing Officer (Research and Enterprise) at the University of Huddersfield, explains why they are participating: “As recognized in the recent REF2014, our academics are publishing an increasing amount of high quality research, and it is integral to our Research Strategy that we ensure this work is widely accessed, recognized and applied. We are hoping that engaging with the Kudos Institutional Program will provide a centralized view on how our research is being shared, and will integrate with our existing practices around public engagement and accessibility.” With pilot places limited, institutions should register their interest now, by contacting charlie.a.rapple@growkudos.com.

Over 35,000 researchers have now registered to use the Kudos system, which enables them to explain and share their published work to wider audiences. The addition of plain language explanations helps broaden the accessibility of research, both directly (through researchers’ sharing across their own interdisciplinary networks), and by enabling non-specialist staff in press offices, marketing departments and media outlets to communicate the outcomes of research more effectively. Early analysis of Kudos data gathered during 2014 indicates that the existence of plain language explanations, in addition to core bibliographic metadata, can substantially increase the likelihood of users progressing to read the full text of an article.

Kudos (www.growkudos.com) provides a platform:
• for assembling or creating information (such as lay summaries or related multimedia) that helps readers filter the growing quantity of published research;
• for sharing such information (for example, via social media or email) to increase discoverability; and
• for measuring and monitoring the effect of both creating and sharing additional metadata and multimedia.

The Kudos site is free for researchers to use. The Kudos Publisher and Institutional Programs provide reports that help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of efforts to build the visibility of research, for example by identifying articles that are likely to attract widespread interest, and by enabling organizations to align messaging and timing with authors’ own activities to increase overall impact. Kudos was named Best New End User Product at the 2014 Charleston Advisor Readers’ Choice Awards.
