Kudos is shortlisted for ALPSP Award for Innovation in Publishing

July 13th, 2015 — Kudos, which helps researchers, publishers and institutions to manage and increase the reach and impact of publications, has announced that it has been shortlisted for the 2015 ALPSP Awards for Innovation in Publishing. The Awards are a prestigious annual event in which the leading developments in scholarly and professional publishing are recognised. Applications must demonstrate “excellence in terms of originality and innovation, significance and value to its community, utility and long-term viability”. Melinda Kenneway, Kudos’ Executive Director, will present Kudos directly to the Awards’ judges this week; she says, “Scholarly communications is evolving fast, with the digital era driving substantial redevelopment of publishing formats, processes and products. Beyond evolution, new ideas are increasingly emerging that spring from a more ambitious and bolder vision. We’re proud that Kudos has been recognised as being amongst these and excited to share with the judges our longer-term plans for having a real and substantial impact on research effectiveness.”

ALPSP’s publication of its shortlist includes further comments, from:

Chair of the judging panel, Richard Gedye: “Scholarly publishing provides an increasingly complex service and this was reflected in the quality of this year’s submissions. After careful consideration, the panel has selected a shortlist which they believe includes some of the most innovative projects and services today.”

Audrey McCulloch, Chief Executive of ALPSP: “The ALPSP Awards allow us to shine the spotlight on some of the best new initiatives in our industry and demonstrate how rapidly publishing is evolving in line with the needs of today’s scholarly community.”

The awards have often presaged great success; past winners include PLOS One and PeerJ. As a shortlisted applicant, Kudos will be presented at a quick fire session during the ALPSP International Conference on Wednesday 9 September, and the final winner will be revealed at the Awards Dinner the following evening. Wish us luck!

Kudos provides a free platform for researchers to manage communications around their publications – across multiple publishers and tools. They explain work in plain language and generate trackable links for sharing via email, web and social networks; these enable communications to be directly mapped against views, downloads, altmetrics and citations. Kudos thereby provides researchers, and their publishers and institutions, with a rich understanding of which channels and activities are most effective for broadening reach and impact. Kudos has over 40 publisher customers around the world, including Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press, the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. The company is also working with institutions including the current and previous “UK University of the Year” (Universities of Birmingham and Huddersfield). Early analysis of Kudos data indicates that the existence of plain language explanations can substantially increase the likelihood of users progressing to read the full text of an article. Kudos was named Best New End User Product at the 2014 Charleston Advisor Readers’ Choice Awards.
