Kudos welcomes more publisher and institutional partners

September 1 2015 / By Charlie Rapple

September 1st, 2015 – Kudos (www.growkudos.com), which helps maximize the reach and impact of research publications, has announced its latest partners. New publisher customers include ASTM International, which publishes standards and related research in civil engineering, materials and testing; Duke University Press, which publishes books and journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics; and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, which publishes books and journals as well as conference proceedings. New participants in Kudos’ pilot for institutions include the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Liverpool.

Mary Summerfield from SPIE Publications noted: “SPIE is a multi-disciplinary society and we see the value of researchers describing their work in terms that the wider community can understand. SPIE is pleased to assist our authors in using Kudos to provide that access to their proceedings papers, journal articles, and books.”

Rachel Middlemass, Research Impact Manager at the London School of Economics and Political Science, adds a corresponding view from the institutional perspective: “The LSE is committed to supporting the efforts of all of its researchers to engage audiences beyond, as well as within, academia with the excellent research that they produce, including by increasing the visibility and accessibility of LSE research online. The School hopes that Kudos will prove a useful tool to help its researchers connect the widest possible audiences around the world with their published work and to better understand the most effective online mechanisms for achieving this.”

Kudos for Institutions will launch fully in October 2015. Earlybird discounts are available – institutions are invited to register their interest with Charlie Rapple, charlie.a.rapple@growkudos.com.

Over 60,000 researchers have signed up to use Kudos’ free platform for managing communications around their publications – across multiple publishers and tools. They explain work in plain language and generate trackable links for sharing via email, web and social networks; these enable communications to be directly mapped against views, downloads, altmetrics and citations. Kudos thereby provides researchers, and their publishers and institutions, with a rich understanding of which channels and activities are most effective for broadening reach and impact. Kudos has over 40 publisher customers around the world, including Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press, the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. The company is also working with institutions including the current and previous “UK University of the Year” (Universities of Birmingham and Huddersfield). Early analysis of Kudos data indicates that the existence of plain language explanations can substantially increase the likelihood of users progressing to read the full text of an article. Kudos was named Best New End User Product at the 2014 Charleston Advisor Readers’ Choice Awards and is a finalist in the 2015 ALPSP Awards for Innovation in Publishing. It has been named in Outsell’s “Ten to Watch” for two consecutive years.
